First%20Days%20in%20Lima%20188 M How To Drink Like a PeruvianI recently had an opportunity to spend two weekends back to back visiting my wife’s friends for an authentic Peruvian BBQ and a futbol match where we unfortunately lost against Uruguay. Hey, after living in Lima since May I think I can say ‘we.’ Up until now most of the time I spent here we went out to party at different clubs or Aiko’s friends were all drinking different mixed drinks. This was the first time I was able to hang out with a bunch of guys drinking beer, and boy did I have something to learn about how to drink here.

Now, I’m no expert in … well really anything, but when it comes to drinking beer I like to think I’m a bit ahead of the curve. Alas, even I still have humbling moments when I’m taught the fundamentals on how to drink right. Hey, if I’m going to have to be walked through a new way on how to do something, it might as well be beer.

First things first, throw any reservations about cooties, germs, and backwash out the window – they won’t serve you here.

Buying beer in cans, actually anything in cans, here is not all that common – and neither are individual bottles. Instead, what you are more likely to find is the large liter bottles of beer. Don’t get confused when 5 or more of you stand around with 1 bottle and 1 glass, this is normal.

Instead of everyone filling up their own glass, or having their own can, on person fills up their glass partially – enough for two sips. Then, you pass the bottle to the person next to you, that signifies they are next to get the glass. You don’t want to over fill your glass, because the whole group is waiting for you to take your sips and pass your glass to the next party goer.  They do pay some heed to the notion of backwash, and fling the empty glass or pour the left over into a second glass if you are indoors.

Simple as that, pour a little, sip relatively quickly, pass and then wait. From my experience, this works well at first but once it has made its way around a few times and people start getting  a bit more chatty, the rotation starts to slow down.
